The main character in Dead Like Me is a 18-year-old young girl named Georgia "George" Lass. George is young but she has a most despressing personality, a typical person who displays a languid indifference to almost everything in the world. She works in a big company as a boring file clerk (filing those mountainous pile of archives).

On the first day at work, while walking on the street on her lunch break, George is unluckily to be hit by a toilet which happened to fall down from the space. However, it is more humorous that she is chosen to be "grim reaper" (the one who takes the spirit of someone after his death) because it is just her turn, like sales with prizes in department store.

It is not easy to be a "grim reaper". They live a common life like normal people except that they will not get ill and no hurt matters. To live a life, they have to find a job, find a house to live in and pay the rent. I love the beginning segment of Dead Like Me very much --- Holding a scythe, Reapers walk their dogs in the park, queue up to wash clothes in the laundry, read papers on the bus, busy themself in front of computers in the general offices...

Hence, George goes to a more boring company and works as an office clerk, doing the more boring work --- copying documents, stapling papers...
