Email Friend Contact Author (ePrintWire.Org) – In The Olive Tree, the author describes some of the disastrous consequences of discrimination against women in his both intimate and impersonal relationships with women. He seeks to identify the root cause of all forms of unfair discrimination. He is a scion of some of those Afrikaners who in the past perpetrated gender and race discrimination upon the wonderfully diversified peoples of South Africa. The root cause of unfair discrimination seems to be humankind's tendency to experience guilt towards whatever concept it has of the Creator. When "Adam" was confronted by his God about his own wrong-doing, he defended himself: "The woman you gave me, she..." in stead of asking and accepting full forgiveness for his own wrong-doing. Humankind, because of its unresolved tendency to experience guilt, has often discriminated against "those others" who look, believe and behave differently. We have often oppressed and even killed "those others" in an attempt to salve our conscience, please our gods, and escape the supposed wrath of those gods. In South Africa the Christian religion has the greatest number of adherents amongst its diversity of religions. Remarkably, however, the Christian religion's own offer of complete salvation with its core message of full acceptance of the self and others does not seem to have been applied fully in the past. The rich human and natural diversity of South Africa offers untold possibilities if its people should come to appreciate fully themselves and all others around them in an integrated unity-in-diversity.
